Come and Sing With Us!
We welcome every adult who wants to sing for pleasure
We meet every Tuesday during term-time, from 7-9.15pm, at St Mary's Church on Bramall Lane.
Just turn up, pay for the night on the door, and enjoy! Your first session is free.
It's just £7 per night (£3.50 if you would find it difficult to pay the full fee). If you are someone who cannot afford the reduced rate fee (e.g. if you are an asylum seeker or disadvantaged in another way), please speak to one of the Core Group or contact us. We now strongly prefer that you pay by card, but can take cash if it would otherwise prevent you joining us.
Everything is taught by ear, one part at a time
The Natural Voice philosophy that we adhere to assumes that everyone can learn to sing. There is no need to be able to read music and there are no auditions.
New people are welcome to come along at any time. If it's your first time, your first session is free. Tell the people around you that you're new, and they'll help you out. When you're at your first session listen out for the members' area password and sign up to receive choir info via email.
At Our Tuesday Sessions
We start with a warm-up to get our voices ready for singing.
Then we split into parts to sing in harmony. You are welcome to sing whichever part you fancy, the part where you feel most comfortable. This could be the melody, high or low harmony, or the doo wops in a doo wop song.
The songs could be almost anything. We might sing African, East European, South American, British, Popular, Doo Wop, Gospel, Swing… a great mix of all kinds of song. Although some of our material has, in the broadest sense, political or religious content -- as in South African or Gospel pieces -- we are not a political or religious group. We come together only to sing for enjoyment.
Don’t worry if you don’t know the song because you missed the session when it was originally taught. Some of us forget anyway! Nothing we sing should be too difficult to pick up with the help of other members and our teachers.
There's a break for refreshments, but please bring your own drinks.
Performing with Purple Cats
Our main purpose is just to get together on Tuesdays to sing for pleasure. But those of us who enjoy performing do so occasionally -- maybe two or three times a year.
In the run-up to the choir giving a performance, we'll spend a bit more time on the songs we're going to perform. Even if you're not performing, you'll enjoy singing alongside people who've learned the songs well and when the choir will sound at its best. We take care that people not planning to perform still have a good sing. We save our detailed preparations for additional rehearsal sessions - these are not on Tuesday nights.
